Fred Lewis and MiRa El are your hosts at Rocky Point. We are both long time yoga practitioners and enjoy the combination of yoga, ocean swimming, body surfing and kayaking that this pristine area offers.
Fred has owned and operated healing and workshop centers since 1975 and has also been involved in the health food industry. He bought the Rocky Point property in 1998 and ran it as a resort until 2004 when we had our first yoga season. Fred learned Ashtanga Yoga from Tim Miller in 1985 in Encinitis, California and has loved it ever since. Tim came and taught one of the first classes when the yoga center opened as well as vacationing here a few times. Kathy Cooper is in her second year as our resident teacher. Our guests have loved her sensitive, personal style of teaching. MiRa El joined Fred in 2004 and has been doing Yoga since 1968. She first learned Ashtanga from Tim and Prem Carlisi here at Rocky Point when the center opened. MiRa has taught and led groups in singing, sufi dancing and the fields of holistic healing and self- empowerment since 1978. Together with Fred, their natural way of living and being create a relaxed atmosphere where you can let go and experience a new level of self- awareness and healing. A local Sri Lankan family is an integral part of Rocky Point, with various members working on the staff. They add to your authentic Sri Lankan experience, such as delicious coconut curries!
Over the years the resort has been developed into a yoga retreat center, and this is our sixth year with a resident Ashtanga Yoga teacher. We do yoga six days a week and find it a wonderful way to start each day. We are very pleased to have Kathy Cooper as our resident teacher. She is one of the early pioneers in bringing Ashtanga Yoga to the west, and is a gracious person and teacher. We welcome what she brings to us and to you, our guests.
Our desire is for our guests to feel comfortable and at home. We do our best to serve the freshest and healthiest food available and create a relaxed atmosphere. Our lovely grounds are filled with tropical flowers, fruit trees and coconut palms. Our reasonable rates make it possible for our guests to easily stay a month or more. This contributes to the community feeling that is commonly expressed in the words, “ A home away from home.”
